Janice Engel

Award-winning filmmaker Janice Engelā€™s feature-length documentary, RAISE HELL: THE LIFE & TIMES OF MOLLY IVINS, made its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and went on to garner numerous awards at festivals including SXSW. Released by Magnolia Pictures, it had an 18-week nationwide run from Alabama to Alaska. RAISE HELL premiered in the UK and Ireland via Modern Films. In 2022, it was selected as one of the 213 Best Movies Directed by Women in the 21st Century by Rotten Tomatoes. Engel has made numerous documentaries and non-fiction television series and specials for major media companies including JACKSON BROWNE: GOING HOME (Cable Ace-Award), TED HAWKINS AMAZING GRACE (Rose Dā€™Or Special Jury Prize) and the provocative docu-series, ADDICTED (Prism Award).


She created WHAT WE CARRY, an ongoing multimedia series dedicated to preserving Holocaust survivors' stories. Following its premiere at the Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, it was presented at the 2014 International Conference in Holocaust Education at Yad Vashem in Israel, where it is housed in its permanent collection.


Engel is a professor at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where she teaches film production. She is a member of the International Documentary Association and Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
